Greater Oudtshoorn - Local Tourism overview

The town of Oudtshoorn is in the Klein Karoo between the Swartberg and Outeniqua mountains. Oudtshoorn is the ostrich capital of the world. Ostriches are found in great numbers and the region produces the best feathers, leather products and ostrich meat in the world. But the world’s biggest bird is just one of the many attractions in this area of exceptional contrasts and natural beauty.

It is also:

  • Home to the spectacular Cango Caves, Africa’s largest show cave system;
  • In the vicinity of an ecological hotspot where three distinct plant biomes (succulent karoo, cape thicket and fynbos) converge; and
  • Nestled next to the Swartberg mountain range, which is part of the Cape Floral World Heritage Site.

De Rust, the picturesque village situated at the southern entrance to Meiringspoort, 35km east of Oudtshoorn.

The town is nestled between the Swartberg and Kammanassie Mountains and, as getaway between the Klein Karoo and Great Karoo; it is the ideal stop over. Apart from being a popular country escape for many artists, the area is well known for producing excellent wines;pot stilled brandy; fruit, onions and vegetables seeds. It is also ostrich country as are most of the towns in the region.
